Vietnam Veteran author speaks at our Post

PROLOGUE

Subject: Vietnam memoir author wants to speak at the post

Message: My name is Jim Smith. I'm a Vietnam veteran. I'm 67. I've written a memoir on my 1972 tour called "Heroes to the End, An Army Correspondent's Last Day in Vietnam" (www.heroestotheend.com). Since October, I've done 50 speaking engagements at libraries and service clubs, including an appearance at the Massapequa Park book club meeting; they bought 20 books through director Janice Schoen.

I'm donating proceeds from speaking fees and book sales ($20) to United Veterans Beacon House (www.uvbh.com), a Bay Shore nonprofit that runs 34 homeless shelters for veterans and others; I am the Board chair of that group. I've raised more than $7,000 doing this and sold 257 books.

Local Veterans Day Event 2016 at Temple Beth Am

Veterans Day Event

Temple Beth Am, 2377 Merrick Avenue, Merrick, NY 11566

To the Veterans in our community:

Hello my name is Jeff Newman and I am a Vietnam veteran.

Last May coming up to Memorial Day, Rabbi Mickey Baum of Temple Beth Am led a Friday night service. When it came time for Kaddish (the traditional prayer of the deceased), in addition to reading the names of temple members, he read the names of those who have made the supreme sacrifice during the "war on terror".

As a Vietnam veteran I was very moved by this and suggested to our clergy that perhaps we can do something here at Temple Beth Am for the veterans within our community on this upcoming Veterans Day which just happens to fall on a Friday this year. The clergy is 100% in favor and so a committee was formed with me as the chairman.
